GUIDE · CURLY HAIR
Which haircut should you choose for thick curly hair?
Thick curly hair never lacks volume; it lacks shape. The right cut removes weight where it crushes the curl and keeps length where it defines the style.

SHORT ANSWER
For thick curly hair, the cuts that work best are the curly taper (length on top, blended sides), the short curly crop, medium length with cleaned-up sides and, for more character, the curly mullet or a fade with defined curls on top. The common rules: cut it dry, remove interior weight rather than length, and keep the sides shorter than the top so the shape never turns into a triangle.
CHOOSE
Choose by length and upkeep
Curly taper (5–8 cm on top)
The most versatile choice: visible curls, clean sides, 4-to-6-week grow-out.
Short curly crop (2–4 cm)
Tight, defined curls, short fringe, almost no styling. Ideal for fine to medium curls.
Medium length with cleaned sides (8–15 cm)
Full volume on top with a discreet taper or undercut to prevent the helmet effect.
Fade + defined curls
Strong contrast, top styled with cream; appointments every 3 weeks.
Curly mullet
Length at the back, blended temples; needs a barber who cuts curls dry.
Why thick curly hair turns into a triangle
Curl grows outward as much as downward. When the sides reach the same length as the top, they widen and the silhouette becomes a triangle or a helmet. The fix is not to cut everything short: keep the sides shorter or blended, and remove weight inside the top so the curls settle instead of stacking.
Cut it dry, not wet
A wet curl stretches and can look twice as long. Cut wet, it springs up as it dries and the result is shorter and less even than planned. For thick curly hair, the shape is decided on dry hair, curl by curl, then refined. Ask for it explicitly if your barber usually wets the hair first.
- Weight removal
- Point cutting or thinning inside the hair, never on the surface, to avoid frizz.
- Sides
- A low-to-mid taper or fade; a high fade creates a very strong contrast against dense curls.
- Outline
- Clean neckline and temples every 3 to 4 weeks, even while the top grows.
Which cut for which curl type
Loose curls (2C–3A): medium length and the curly taper work very well; a light cream is enough. Tight curls (3B–3C): the curly crop and a fade with a defined top give the cleanest result; curl cream and a diffuser help. Coily hair (4A and up): see the Afro haircuts guide; the shape logic is the same, the technique changes.
Upkeep: products and rhythm
Wash two to three times a week, condition every time, apply a curl cream on damp hair and air-dry or diffuse. Skip matte clays and waxes that break the curl. Cutting rhythm: every 3 to 4 weeks for a fade, 5 to 6 weeks for a taper or medium length, with a neckline clean-up in between.
How Youssef approaches thick curly hair
Youssef starts by reading the dry curls, density and growth direction, then decides the top length and side height as one silhouette. Weight comes out from the inside, each curl is cut with its shape respected, and the result is checked from the front and profile. Book a Standard Haircut for a taper or crop, a Skin Fade if the sides go down to skin.

FAQ
The questions left.
What is the best haircut for thick curly hair?
The curly taper is the safest starting point: length on top, blended sides, clean grow-out. The curly crop suits you if you want less styling; medium length if you want volume.
Should curly hair be cut dry or wet?
Dry, especially when it is thick. A wet curl stretches and springs back as it dries; the shape is decided dry.
Does a fade work with curly hair?
Yes, a low or mid fade. A very high skin fade creates a strong contrast against dense curls; choose it deliberately.
How do I avoid the triangle or helmet look?
Keep the sides shorter than the top (taper or fade) and have interior weight removed from the top every 4 to 6 weeks.
Which product for thick curly hair?
A curl cream or styling cream on damp hair. Avoid matte clays and waxes that cause frizz.
Which service should I book with Youssef?
Standard Haircut for a taper, crop or medium length; Skin Fade if the sides go down to skin. Prices are posted on the services page.
