What should you tell a new barber?
You do not need to know clipper guard numbers or the exact name of a fade. Describe the result, the problems you want to avoid and your routine; the barber's job is to translate that information into technique.
SHORT ANSWER
Bring one or two reference photos, explain exactly what you like in each, say how long your hair has been growing and point to the area bothering you most. Add how much time you spend styling and how often you get a haircut. Those five details are much more useful than simply saying “the usual.”

Reference
Point to the fade height, texture or beard detail you like; one photo can be useful for only one element.
Length
Say what you want to keep, not only how much you want removed.
Problem
Identify where it puffs out, falls badly, looks too light or becomes difficult after a week.

A photo of your own successful haircut is often even better. If possible, keep views from the front, both sides and the back.
Explain what happens after the appointment
Describe how the cut changes after a week or after washing. A side that sticks out, a crown that splits or a beard line that is hard to maintain gives the barber practical information about how the shape should be built.
