Grey and salt-and-pepper hair: the cuts that make it look intentional.
Grey isn’t a problem to hide, it is a texture and a colour to cut differently. Grey hair is thicker, drier and often less disciplined; the cut has to account for that.
SHORT ANSWER
The cuts that flatter grey or salt-and-pepper hair most are short textured cuts (crop, short scissor cut), a low taper or classic taper with a 3 to 5 cm top, a matte brush-back or slick-back for longer hair, and a uniform buzz cut when grey dominates. Short sides make the salt-and-pepper contrast stand out instead of drowning it. Avoid shapeless medium lengths, shiny products, and “natural” dyes that turn orange.

Why grey hair cuts differently
A grey hair has lost its melanin and often part of its sebum: it is drier, thicker and coarser, with a tendency to spring up. It holds long shapes poorly without product and looks frizzy on a shapeless medium length. Cut short and textured, it does the opposite: it gives relief and contrast that uniform dark hair doesn’t have.
Short sides: the rule that changes everything
On salt-and-pepper hair, short sides (taper, low fade, #1.5 to #2) concentrate the grey where it is most visible, around the temples, and turn it into a style element instead of a sign of neglect. A slightly longer, textured top creates the balance. It is the cut I recommend most often to men between 40 and 60.

Managing yellowing
Grey yellows with sun, tobacco, some products and hard water. A purple shampoo once a week neutralises the yellow; more often and it leaves a mauve tint. Avoid yellow waxes and heavy oils on grey hair. For the beard, a clear, untinted balm is enough.
To dye or not
A full dye on grey hair needs roots every three to four weeks and often turns orange or flat black. If you want to soften rather than hide, a semi-permanent blend covering 30 to 50% of the grey fades in better and grows out without a line. Most clients who cut short and clean end up keeping the grey as it is.
